September 11, 2001 was a real shakeup in the life of many
all over the world. None more than those of us here in the
US. Our lives changed for the worse, & perhaps at the
same time the better. We have learned many things, we have
pulled together more as a nation than ever before.
I remember walking out the door to head to work that day,
getting in my car & listening to the radio station.
They were on a commercial break, yes, they still have to
have those even when doing nothing but news, & then
it came back, talking about how a plane hit the World Trade
Center just about an hour before at this point. Then while
I was listening, the 2nd plane hit.
You can't know how much that still haunts me, or how many
tears I shed then & how many I still shed now. Every
day, I think about the September 11th attacks. I still have
the silk yellow rose attached to my antenna on my car, &
the red/white/blue ribbons tied to my antenna. In my car,
I have a bandana with the flag all over it in my window,
with silk roses in red, white & blue wrapped with red,
white & blue pipecleaners in my window.
I remember getting told a little over a week after that
that I had to move. I don't know how much of that was because
I am Muslim or how much of it truly had to do with my roommates
wanting the two rooms I rented to expand their home based
businesses. I remember the intolerance that one of my neighbors
showed me, just because I had my head covered, when I was
loading my car with some stuff to move it. He screamed at
me from the driveway of the next door neighbor, all the
way down the street (3 houses) & around the corner.
I could hear him as he went to the stop sign, he was screaming
that loudly at me.
I'm an American, born & raised, blonde-brown hair &
hazel eyes. English is the only language I really speak,
though I speak a little of other languages. To this day,
what he did still haunts me. To this day, knowing that the
terrorists taught my country that Fundamentalists is the
way of Islam, when it isn't, hurts me.
I pray daily for peace on this world. I know however, that
no matter where we go or what we do or how much we progress
towards peace there will always be war & conflict. That
is because God in his infinite wisdom gave us free will.
He gave us the ability to choose. Just remember, people
don't always choose the right way. People choose to do the
wrong thing, they choose to forget. My favorite bumper sticker
says "Allah gives & forgives, Man gets & forgets".
Unfortunately, that is the case for many in the world. Not
everyone, but many.
