On September 11th, I received a call in the morning from my spouse. They said they saw a plane hit the towers & to turn on the TV. After that I watched in horror as the 2nd plane hit on live TV. But I could only see an explosion. I told my spouse to get out of New York as quickly as possible since they were only 3 blocks away. But at that time, they stopped the ferries, so they could not leave. However, my spouse said they would try. I knew that they had to walk towards the World Trade to catch the ferry, so I was very worried. Friends & family were calling me the whole morning. The first tower went down, & I remember thinking that my spouse had to be under that rubble since that was the direction that they were heading. But I could not get in touch with them. None of the regular phones or cell phones were working when I tried. I have teenage children that drive, so I called the school that they attend & asked that my children come home immediately. My children stayed with me during the time that seemed to last forever. Finally, a few hours later, my spouse called & said they were fine & were able to catch a ferry home.

Since September 11, I have tried to keep my life pretty much the same. I still visit New York & enjoy the city & I still travel by plane for vacation. But my outlook at life has changed. I try no longer to complain about the inconveniences of life & to enjoy the simple things as much as possible. I treasure my freedom & love my country more than I ever have.
