Doshes
On September 11, 2001, I worked fairly close to a large
metropolitan airport. I remember hearing my co-workers spreading
the news of the disaster & turning to the Internet to
hear of the horror for myself. Being within a mile of the
airport, we closed early & everyone was sent home.
I drove home going through all the motions. Signal to switch
lanes, stop at the red light, go at the green. But I was
stunned in disbelief. About half way home, the tears came
as the weight of reality came down upon my shoulders. The
world, as I knew it, had changed forever.
I didn't lose a direct relative in the tragedy. But I mourned
for the brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons &
daughters of those who did. I ached for the safety &
security that I had known, prior to the moment of impact.
It is said that character is shaped by how we react to
what happens in our lives. What the terrorists wanted us
to remember on 9-11 was destruction, fear & pain. They
didn't know our character. Amid the turmoil, I witnessed
courage, compassion, & hope. I swelled with pride at
the waving of the American Flag.
Almost a year later, I find that: I love a little deeper.
I forgive a little easier. I talk to my family more. I do
not take freedom for granted. And I thank God more often
for what I have.
