What is IM?

Instant Messaging, also called "IM," allows two people to communicate in over the Internet just as if they were having a face-to-face talk with the other person. It is much faster than email. Some Instant Messaging software allows you to track when another person "logs on" or "logs off" of the Internet. Some software also gives you the ability to send files to your friends, and receive files they send to you.
Most Instant Messaging programs require you to pick and register a screen name or enter an e-mail address in order to use the service. This is how the program knows when you are online. This also enables you to check if your friends with the same program are online when you are, and allows them to see if you are online. (Most programs will also let you send email if the friend you want to talk to is not online when you are.)

Instant Messaging, in addition to opening up a new future in Internet communications for adults, has opened up new doors for children. Study partners for school projects, pen-pals, and international e-mail pals for foreign language practice are just of the few of the appealing aspects of Instant Messaging for kids. It also gives our children a head start into the wonderful world of computers, which will play a huge role in their lives. While there are dangers(LINK to online risks) that go along with these benefits, it is possible to get informed and "play it safe."

Finally, for parents considering whether or not to let their child start Instant Messaging, there are some handy safety tips and a how-to-guide for setting up Instant Messaging programs. Remember, if you ever have questions or need help with online safety, WiredSafety is here to help!
