Sophia's Safe Surfing Club

MerlinGot Any Questions?

My friend Merlin will answer them for you.

But...Merlin, I know these people I chat with...so they're not strangers, right?

You may think you know who they are, but they can be anyone they want to be online. A man can say he is a twelve-year-old girl, & you can't tell that he's not, because you can't see him. Sometimes grownups online like to try to trick kids into thinking they are kids too...

Sometimes kids like to trick other kids too...remember that anything you can do online others can do online too.

You can sometimes tell if they are really kids, by asking them some questions that only another kid would know...but even that won't prove anything, cause sometimes adults study this kids stuff just to fool you...

Smart Surfing Club members are too smart to get fooled into meeting someone in real ife, or sharing private stuff with anyone on line...

Be sure you teach other kids how to surf safely!

What should we say when people ask us our name? I don't want to sound mean or rude!

Some kids like to makeup a pretend name, like a super name. I always hated the name "Merlin." I wanted to be named "Michael." When I'm online & people ask me my name, I tell them it's "Michael." (It's my special online name.) You can makeup a special online name, too!

You can even make up a pet, or where you live, or the name of your best friend. You can makeup a pretend story & when someone asks you for personal information about you, you can tell them the pretend information.

If I don't want to make up a name, what can I do?

You can tell them that you don't give out personal information online, because you're a Sophia's Safe Surfing Club member.

Make sure that you don't give out any personal information on forms either, unless your parents tell you it's okay.

Why shouldn't I give my real name & address to people I meet online?

You already know not to talk to strangers you meet on the street, or in the schoolyard, right? You wouldn't walk up to a stranger on a bus & tell them your name & address, would you?

Because we "talk" to people we don't know online, we forget that they are strangers, even though we think we know them because we chat with them online.

Chatting is fun, & chatting with new people you meet online is extra special fun...but these people are strangers, & you shouldn't tell them anything you wouldn't tell a stranger on a bus.

Next, learn about the rules from my friend Jamie...
