Central Site RegistryOn April 21st 2000 a new law went into effect in the United States. It is called COPPA (The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) & it regulates commercial sites that either collect personal information from US children under the age of 13 (12 years old & under) or allow them to use interactive features where they could, if they chose to, share personal information with strangers. Sites which fall under the new law must obtain parent's permission before collecting the information (in most cases) & before allowing children to use the interactive features. While we actively support this law, & the reasons behind it (protecting children's safety & privacy), it has been a bit confusing for the kids Internet industry & certain other sites which fall under the Act. We have learned that parents are interested in giving their consent once to several approved sites at the same time, & are seeking my recommendations & those of WiredPatrol & WiredKids in selecting those sites we trust. We also recognize that compliance with COPPA can be time-consuming & costly for the sites, as well. |
